And so it begins!  Welcome to the website for Introduction to Philosophy at BHCC this fall, as taught by Monica Poole.  If you’re joining us for Fall 2014, there is no need to read posts earlier than this one–they apply to previous semesters of the course.

Today, we met as a class for our first meeting.  We talked about the course and its structure, shared some of our values with one another, and learned a bit about logic.  The syllabus was distributed.

Here are the things that should be on your to-do list between now and Monday:

  • Read How to Read a Book by Susan Strasser and Excerpts from The Needs of the Soul by Simone Weil.
  • Identify a quote (a song lyric, a line from a poem, etc.) that you believe speaks to a need of the soul.  It should be a need of the soul that YOU believe is a need of the soul.  It doesn’t have to be one that Weil identifies.  Be prepared to share it, to tell us what you think the need is that it speaks to, and to introduce yourself to your fellow philosophers.
  • Set up a twitter account at  Here’s a document that can help you.
  • Email me (email is in the syllabus above) and tell me your twitter username.  Please do this by the end of the day on Sunday.
  • Tweet by Monday at 10am a question OR A COMMENT about the readings and topic of Monday’s class.  Your tweet should include @nothipparchia and #phil101.
  • Come to class on Monday ready to introduce yourself and talk about the needs of the soul!
